Taking Learning Outside Professional Learning Series coming up soon - working together to get more students outside

Many Lower Columbia Nature Network partners have been working together for the last several months to create a yearlong series to equip teachers with the knowledge they need to get their students outside more. Thanks to the collaboration of partners in the network, teachers in our area will gain new skills and confidence to take their students outside as a part of their academic day.

Taking Learning Outside will kick off with a full day session at Luke Jensen Sports Park Community Room October 25th. Follow up sessions will be from 4-6pm. Over the 2024-25 academic year, the Taking Learning Outside Series offers multiple sessions (both in-person and online) that cover a wide range of topics and grade levels. In person sessions will happen at various locations across SW Washington. Sign up for one session, or sign up for multiple! All sessions are free to register and offer STEM Clock Hours upon completion. All registration links will soon be live.

We’re looking for LCNN partners to help lead a training. If you or your team have some ideas to help teachers successful navigate outdoor learning, we would love to connect with you. Ideas include: Youth Leadership, Outdoor projects for Middle School and High School students, hands-on learning projects, etc.  Visit the training website for the topic areas.

We’re thankful to the wonderful partners below who are working together to offer this to educators of southwest Washington.

  • ESD 112

  • Pacific Education Institute (PEI)

  • Washington Science Teachers Association (WSTA)

  • Lower Columbia School Gardens

  • WSU Extension Master Gardener Program

  • ClimeTime

  • Lower Columbia Nature Network

This project began as a discussion in the Green Schoolyards Steering Committee and was an item on our draft Action Plan. It’s wonderful to see the 18 months of work and collaboration result in actionable items for our community to benefit our children. Those benefits will be long lasting with more students developing a love of being outside and discovering all that nature has to offer for their mind and body.
