Seeds to Salmon - Curriculum Workshop - Part 1

Welcome Washington 6-12 Grade Educators

Join the Lower Columbia Fish Enhancement Group (LCFEG) and the Pacific Education Institute (PEI) for an engaging and hands-on workshop to pilot the newly updated Seeds to Salmon Curriculum! Designed to address critical shortages of conifer seeds and native plants for replanting after wildfires and increasing native plant stocks for restoration work, this curriculum not only promotes increased plant availability and diversity but also provides students with invaluable, hands-on experience in native plant propagation and ecological restoration.

With the Seeds to Salmon curriculum, throughout the year, students will explore 12 dynamic lessons, structured into two 6-week sessions—one in the fall and one in the spring—allowing students to connect with nature during both growing seasons. Led by LCFEG's Education and Outreach Manager and PEI's Lower Columbia FieldSTEM Coordinator, this workshop will introduce the Fall curriculum, its materials, and let you test the activities firsthand!

Interactive Lessons & Breakout Sessions: Dive into hands-on experiences as you learn about native plant propagation right in your school's greenhouse and brainstorm program implementation with likeminded teachers!

Gain insights into:

  • The differences between native, non-native, and invasive plants.

  • Characteristics of healthy watersheds.

  • The ecological relationships between plants and the salmon life cycle.

  • Plant propagation and cultivation techniques for key native species.

Standard protocols for successful plant propagation.
The role of native plants in ecological and salmon habitat restoration.

Personal Connection: Develop a deeper understanding of the waterways and natural resources in Southwest Washington and develop your own emotional awareness surrounding these topics.

Career Awareness: Explore job opportunities and essential skills related to natural resource management.

Join us to cultivate not just plants, but also knowledge and enthusiasm for ecological stewardship in your community. Let’s make a splash together as we pilot this exciting curriculum!
